Track and field teams finished strong at home

The Central College Track and Field teams hosted their first meet of the outdoor season Saturday. Both teams had strong performances with the women finishing third and the men second out of fourteen teams.

On the men’s side top finishes in the running events included senior Kyle Wood (2nd) and junior Logan Danko (3rd) in the 200 meter dash. Along with freshman L.J. Lipscomb (2nd) and sophomore Austin O’Brien (3rd) in the 800 meter run.

There were also strong performances by freshman Eli Horton who won the 1500 meter run with freshman Drew Jackson close behind.

In the field events freshman Matt Strey finished second in the triple jump by over a foot. Senior Tyler Crouse finished sixth in the hammer throw followed by senior Phillip Miller and junior Josh Fleming.

The women’s top finishers in the running events included junior Felicia Coleman who won the 200 meter dash, sophomore Shelby Mendoza finishing third in the 5000 meter and freshman Morgan Meseke in the 10000 meter run.

Central’s 4×100 meter relay team of freshman Rachel Northrup, Coleman, junior Rachel Purdy, and freshman Taylor Beckman finished fourth. Along with their 4×400 meter relay.

In the field events, senior Liz Hasenmiller finished sixth in the pole vault along with senior Morgan Darrow finishing fifth in the shot followed by freshman Bryanna Pierce. Sophomore Jessy Stika finished eighth in the discus and Darrow finished second in the hammer throw.

“Both Dutch track and field teams took a step forward today. It is extremely exciting to see where our team is at right now in respect to where we are at in our training. The next two months are going to be a lot of fun,” said head coach Joe Dunham.
